Is it normal for my gums to bleed when I brush my teeth?
No, it is not. Bleeding upon brushing is a definite sign of gingivitis which is the initial stage of a periodontal disease.

Periodontal (gum) disease is the disease of the soft tissue surrounding the teeth to begin with, and in the later stages involving also the bone that the teeth are embedded in.

The first sign is usually bleeding gums, in later stages the teeth may start getting loose.

Very meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental appointments for professional oral hygiene maintenance are the best way for prevention of the periodontal problems, and some people may need more care than others depending on their genetics.

Is it safe to put a laser in my mouth?

I do not perceive any danger in using laser in the patient's mouth if used properly, however I question it's efficacy compared with its alternatives.

How often should I visit the Periodontist?

You need to visit a periodontist only if your general dentist feels that it is required.

Is there a relationship between tobacco use and periodontal disease?
Yes, there is, smokers have a much higher incidence of periodontal problems.

Will Laser Periodontal Therapy be painful?
I have no experience with laser periodontal therapy, nor I believe that laser must be implemented in the periodontal treatment.

Why does a person need to see their hygienist regularly?

Because most of us fail to do our home care as diligently as we ought to.

The hygienist provides the scaling and root planing and oral hygiene instructions which are the most important starting point in combating the periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is detected by your dentist providing the full examination of your mouth.

Who is a periodontist?
Periodontist is a dentist certified as a specialist in treating periodontal disease only.

What do I do if I think I have gum disease?
You need to be properly examined and assessed by your dentist.

What treatments are available for gum disease?

As for the milder forms of gum disease the routine treatments consists of scaling and root planing by the hygienist of your dentist, if the disease progresses further there are other more complex varieties of treatment.
